<link>http://www.appleproaudio.com/Article1285.html</link>
<description>New Mobile Audio software improves audio quality in any iPhone or iPod touch App

iZotope, Inc., a leading innovator in audio signal processing technology, has expanded their extensive licensing program with a suite of audio enhancement tools and effects available for integration into 3rd party software applications for the iPhone and iPod touch handheld devices.

&quot;We are seeing a significant demand for our audio effect libraries on the iPhone as thousands of developers are flocking to this revolutionary platform. These developers are redefining the way consumers interact with their music and audio,&quot; explained Mark Ethier, CEO of iZotope. &quot;With our offerings for the iPhone, we are excited to enable their innovation as the first to offer high quality audio algorithms for developers to integrate into their applications.&quot;

Over the years, many companies have come to rely on iZotope's research and development, product design, and long-term support to help improve and differentiate their products. Two key iPhone application developers will be among the first to incorporate iZotope technology into their products. &quot;FiRe&quot; from Audiofile Engineering and &quot;SmackTalk!&quot; from Marcus Satellite will both feature licensed audio tools from iZotope.

Audiofile Engineering, a leading Mac-based developer of professional audio products, plans to incorporate iZotope audio effects for audio normalization, cleanup, and enhancement in an upcoming release of their highly-regarded &quot;FiRe&quot; Field Recorder App for the iPhone. &quot;We already rely on iZotope's expertise and audio DSP for our Mac OS X line of products, so it was natural for us to work with iZotope to bring high quality audio processing to the iPhone,&quot; explains Matthew Foust, Co-founder of Audiofile Engineering. Audiofile Engineering is actively developing new iPhone applications as well as providing development services to produce third party iPhone applications.

Marcus Satellite, an animation and electronic music veteran turned App producer, is looking forward to using the iZotope audio effects SDK in his top-100 best selling iPhone App &quot;SmackTalk!&quot; to enhance his users' experience by adding a wide array of interactive voice effects. &quot;I've been using iZotope's audio DSP technology as VST plug-ins on the desktop, and I'm excited about having that level of quality and interactivity available on the iPhone platform&quot;.

<link>http://www.appleproaudio.com/Article1284.html</link>
<description>Platform Expands to Laptop Market with New UAD-2 SOLO/Laptop DSP Accelerator Card, Now Shipping Worldwide

Universal Audio, a leading manufacturer of classic analog recording hardware and audio processing plug-ins for Mac and PC, today announced that its UAD Powered Plug-Ins Platform has surpassed 30,000 users worldwide. This makes UAD the second-largest audio plug-in processing platform in the world (second only to Digidesign’s TDM). Universal Audio is also expanding its award-winning UAD platform to laptop users with the release of the UAD-2 SOLO/Laptop, a compact ExpressCard-based DSP Accelerator, now shipping worldwide.

Since the launch of the original UAD-1 card in 2001, the UAD Powered Plug-Ins collection has steadily grown to include the most sonically revered processors from the past 50 years of audio — including authentic, licensed emulations from Neve, Roland, Moog, Fairchild, Pultec, SPL, Teletronix, and Universal Audio’s own 1176.

As a result, UAD Powered Plug-Ins have become the choice of numerous “A-list” record producers and Grammy®-winning engineers, including Frank Filipetti (James Taylor, Paul Simon); Justin Niebank (Keith Urban, Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts); Ryan West (Kanye West, T.I., T Pain); Chris Dugan (Green Day); Stuart Price (Madonna, The Killers, Seal); Matt Knobel (Lenny Kravitz, Ricky Martin); Vance Powell (White Stripes, Raconteurs); and Rik Simpson (Coldplay).

The newest member of the UAD family, the UAD-2 SOLO/Laptop, brings Universal Audio’s award-winning analog emulations to laptop users, whether in Cubase, Logic, Digital Performer, or Pro Tools. The UAD-2 SOLO/Laptop allows access to the full UAD Powered Plug-Ins library, without the need for external cabling or power. Like all UAD-2 hardware, the SOLO/Laptop supports VST, AU and RTAS plug-in formats on both Mac and PC. The UAD-2 SOLO/Laptop carries a MAP price of $499US.

“Bringing UAD-2 Powered Plug-ins to laptop users is really part of our ongoing vision for expanding the UAD platform, which we’re proud to say is now 30,000 users strong,” commented Universal Audio President Matt Ward. “Bill Putnam Jr. set out to take the best of classic analog equipment and bring it to the digital world — with all of the analog subtleties, intricacies and nuances intact. This level of authenticity simply requires more horsepower than today’s laptops can deliver. But with the SOLO/Laptop, users can plug in a simple ExpressCard and access our musically superior UAD plug-ins.”

<title>Michael Jackson Dead at 50</title>
<link>http://www.appleproaudio.com/Article1283.html</link>
<description>Michael Jackson, the former &quot;King of Pop&quot; music and recording-breaking recording artist, songwriter and performer is dead at the age of 50, from an apparent heart attack in his Holmby Hills home in California. Jackson entered the hospital early this afternoon after an emergency call from his home, and efforts to revived him were unsuccessful. His recording legacy is immense, beginning with his entry into the entertainment industry at a very young age with the Jackson Five, a group he performed in with his four brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon. His sister is renowned child actress turned pop-sensation Janet Jackson and he has another sister, singer LaToya Jackson and parents Katherine and Joe Jackson. He is survived by his three children, brothers and sisters. Jackson was married but has been divorced for several years, making a few false starts and jump-starting his once flawless career, including staying for a time in the middle east and working on the possibility of launching a new record label and album project, but these projects fell apart, and Jackson found himself once again facing another lawsuit.

He once took the advice of Paul McCartney to invest in music publishing catalogs, and when the opportunity presented itself, Jackson outbid McCartney for the rights to the Northern Songs Limited catalog which contained all of the Lennon/McCartney compositions and other Beatles songs. This action caused a lasting rift with McCartney, who never imagined that Michael would follow his advice and actually do what he said when he told Paul, &quot;I'm going to buy your songs, Paul.&quot;

Regrettably, its impossible to talk about Michael Jackson and not have the subject of his personal life overshadow the conversation and his accomplishments. Jackson's incredible catalog of works has unfortunately been overshadowed in the media and his legacy tarnished by multiple problems that at best were ranging from financial mismanagement, uncontrolled spending, borrowing against his catalog, and at worst found him the target of multiple personal lawsuits over alleged child molestations, in addition to a sensational trial accusing him of child molestation at his Neverland Ranch in southern California. Jackson was acquitted of criminal charges, but is said to have paid out millions in settlements to families accusing him through civil actions.

His catalog, income, the catalog of the Beatles, all of these things were borrowed heavily against to finance an incredibly lavish lifestyle. Jackson built at amusement park and zoo at his home, modeled it after Disneyland, and tried to live the life of Peter Pan, the boy who wouldn't grow up.

<title>Sennheiser Supports Ideawerks with Microphones and Headsets</title>
<link>http://www.appleproaudio.com/Article1282.html</link>
<description>Youth culture is awash in sophisticated multimedia, and yet the tools to create those media at a level of professionalism that's competitive with that of the commercial sector are out of reach for most kids. The situation threatens to extinguish the spark of inspiration that drives active creation and sets the stage for a lifetime of passive consumption. But as of this summer, Minneapolis' Institute of Production and Recording (IPR) is turning the tables on that dour trend.

With support from the Hubert H. Humphrey Center for Democracy and Citizenship, IPR has partnered with the Jackie Lee Robinson Foundation and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to create &quot;Ideawerks(r).&quot; Simply put, Ideawerks will provide training and professional grade audio and video equipment to Minneapolis youth via the city's park system. Sennheiser is proud to donate the high-end microphones and headphones, all with lifetime warranty, maintenance, and replacement that will support this astounding initiative.

Minneapolis boasts one of the most extensive park systems in the country. In fact, no resident is ever more than six blocks from a city park! The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board has constructed a recording studio and A/V classrooms that will be duplicated in several rec centers over the next five years. At each park, there will be two classes of 16 to 20 participants each (ages 12 to 18) that will use the facility intensively four hours a day, five days a week for ten weeks recurrently and twelve weeks in the summer. Initially, IPR certified instructors will instruct the students, and as the program progresses, Ideawerks will groom participants and IPR interns to be future instructors and assistants.

The equipment that populates the Ideawerks studio has much in common with the well-appointed studios of IPR. &quot;If a pro deserves the best, then the next generation deserves the best as well,&quot; asserted Andre Fischer, the Grammy-winning executive director of music industries at IPR, legendary drummer, and producer of over forty platinum albums. &quot;Ideawerks is not a dumbing down, it's a lifting up. We want to raise expectations and frame students' work with the same professionalism we expect of ourselves.&quot;

To that end, IPR, Digidesign, Avid, and M-Audio have donated computers, mobile workstations, a Digidesign control 24 digital mixing console, I/Os, and Pro Tools, Reason, and Ableton multimedia software to the project. &quot;In my professional career, I find that almost all of my microphone choices are Sennheiser or Neumann,&quot; said Fischer. &quot;I don't really use other mics. In preparation for Ideawerks, I knew I wanted the kids to hear that same professional detail that I expect of my own work. So of course, I approached Sennheiser.&quot;

Not only has Sennheiser agreed to outfit the project with a complement of microphones that will raise expectations, but they have also backed their contribution with a lifetime warranty with free maintenance and replacement. Ideawerks students will make inspiring recordings with three e 835 handheld vocal mics, three e 604s for toms/snares, one e 602 II for bass drum, two e 614 pencil mics for overheads, and two e 609 Silvers for guitar. In addition, twenty-five Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones will permit both live recording and private monitoring at workstations - with remarkable fidelity!

About Sennheiser
Sennheiser is a world-leading manufacturer of microphones, headphones and wireless transmission systems. Established in 1945 in Wedemark, Germany, Sennheiser is now a global brand represented in 60 countries around the world with U.S. headquarters in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Sennheiser's pioneering excellence in technology has rewarded the company with numerous awards and accolades including an Emmy, a Grammy, and the Scientific and Engineering Award of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

<title>Architect of Modern Alt-Rock Guitar Sound Chooses Digidesign Eleven</title>
<link>http://www.appleproaudio.com/Article1265.html</link>
<description>Gil Norton, the influential producer behind seminal recordings from the Counting Crows, Foo Fighters and the Pixies, embraces Digidesign Eleven for superior guitar amp emulation

Reading record producer Gil Norton’s discography is like reading a definitive history of the evolution of the alternative rock sound. From his early work with underground shoe-gaze pioneers, including the UK’s Pale Saints, to his work on Echo &amp; The Bunnymen’s classic 1987 self-titled album, Norton’s influence on the sound of modern guitar rock is undeniable.

Not one to live in the past, his influence on the modern rock sound is as relevant today as it was when he produced perhaps three of the most celebrated alternative rock records of all time – The Pixie’s trifecta of seminal albums: Doolittle, Bossanova, and Trompe Le Monde. In 2007, Norton appeared onstage at the Grammy® Awards with Foo Fighters to accept the Best Rock Album award for Echoes, Silence, Patience &amp; Grace. The man who defined the sound of modern guitar rock more than 20 years ago (prior to the advent of digital recording technology) was now being recognized for his ongoing evolution in sound — sound he now records with a Pro Tools|HD® system

Norton chose Pro Tools|HD as his exclusive DAW for recording bands due in large part to the variety and quality of plug-ins available only in Pro Tools® software. Among his new favorites is Digidesign’s recently released Eleven™ guitar amp emulation plug-in. In fact, Norton was one of the first producers in the world to work with Eleven.

“This is easily the most natural sounding amp plug-in I’ve ever heard. It sits beautifully in a mix and the tone is just brilliant”, says Norton, regarding the stunningly realistic emulations of classic amplifiers included in Eleven. “I think Eleven is a fantastic plug-in — it just makes the guitar sound bigger.”

Among his six-string collaborators, he is certainly not alone in that opinion. Counting Crows guitarist David Bryson, with whom Norton worked while producing the band’s most recent album, Saturday Nights &amp; Sunday Mornings, is also a huge fan of the plug-in. &quot;Eleven has the best emulation of a [VOX] AC30 I've ever heard in an amp simulator,” says Bryson. “Plus, it's easy to set up and it looks great.”

Pixies lead guitarist Joey Santiago, a longtime friend of Norton’s who is considered by many to be the godfather of alternative rock guitar, also praises the plug-in: &quot;I love Eleven — it sounds great, it sounds real, and it’s easy to dial in a good tone.&quot;

Adapting to new technology — and using it wisely — has helped Norton attain the massive creative and commercial success that has kept him in such high demand to this day, especially with guitar-based bands. Norton first started incorporating Pro Tools into his workflow more than a decade ago while producing the 1996 Counting Crows album, Recovering the Satellites — an album that was certified double platinum and went to #1 in four countries.

Reflecting on the ethos of the time, Norton says that “back then, I think certain bands were a bit scared of digital recording.” When he brought Pro Tools into the studio to record the Foo Fighters’ 1997 classic, The Colour and The Shape, Norton says that initially the band was weary of the platform because they worried it was a “talent compensator.” Fast forward to 2007, and those reservations are a thing of the past. “Now Pro Tools is all we use,” says Norton, commenting on his use of Pro Tools|HD on the Foo’s aforementioned Grammy-winning album. “Since the sampling rates have gone up to 192 kHz with 24-bit resolution, it’s perfect. You get all of the top end, and there’s a really nice air around the sound.”

To accommodate his current workflow, Norton employs a variety of plug-ins (including Eleven) and dual Pro Tools|HD systems to keep the bands he’s tracking concentrating on the music and not the technical elements of the recording process. “The idea is to try and keep the band recording and to allow things to happen in the studio without interrupting the flow of ideas. So I’ve found it’s always nice to have two HD systems — one that’s a designated recording station, and another that’s offline for comping, editing, and anything else that needs to be done.”

Among his favorite plug-ins are Digidesign’s TL Space™ convolution reverb and Reel Tape™ Suite, the latter of which he says is “stunning — a really good simulation of tape… and it sounds great on guitars.” And chief among these peers, of course, is Eleven, “Which,” Norton concludes in his crisp and humble British accent, “I find is just brilliant.”

<link>http://www.appleproaudio.com/Article1264.html</link>
<description>Native Instruments today released ABSYNTH TWILIGHTS, the latest entry in the series of KORE SOUNDPACK libraries. Highly suitable for film and game scoring as well as for various electronic music styles, the new collection offers 200 pads and soundscapes based on the acclaimed ABSYNTH synthesizer. Originally created by Camel Audio / Biomechanoid, all sounds in ABSYNTH TWILIGHTS take full advantage of the powerful sound shaping and preset browsing features in KORE 2 and the free KORE PLAYER.

With its extremely flexible oscillator and effects architecture, and its signature advanced multi-stage envelopes, the semi-modular ABSYNTH synthesizer is universally recognized as one of the foremost instruments for ambient textures. ABSYNTH TWILIGHTS fully explores the capabilities of the ABSYNTH 4 engine integrated in KORE 2 and KORE PLAYER, providing an inspiring arsenal of unique atmospheric sounds that range from evolving, ethereal pads to dark, foreboding soundscapes.

Originally released within the &quot;Biolabs ABSYNTH Sounds Vol. 1-6&quot; series from Camel Audio, every sound in ABSYNTH TWILIGHTS is further enhanced with consistent controller assignments and eight morphing-capable Sound Variations for KORE 2 and the free KORE PLAYER. Full meta data for the Sound Browser in KORE also allows producers to locate sounds based on intuitive musical attributes, making it especially easy to integrate ABSYNTH TWILIGHTS into a professional music production workflow.
